As the first Sunday in May coincides with the May Day bank holiday and many people will be away for the long weekend, we have decided to put our May walk back a week until the 8th May
Paula & Eileen have kindly scoped out a brand new walk for us on ANGLESEY MOUNTAIN
This is a circular walk along the northern fringes of the Cooley Mountains. The walk starts by going along the edge of Fathom Forest, then up to Flagstaff viewpoint. Hopefully, we will enjoy stunning views along Carlingford Lough, the Mournes and even further! From the viewpoint, the route continues to climb inland around the back of Anglesey Mountain before ascending to the summit. There are further spectacular views from the top of Anglesey. The walk then continues downhill to complete the loop in Fathom Forest.
This is a ‘proper’ hill walk, needing boots (walking poles and gaiters optional). The paths include forest track, a short stretch of minor road and natural heathland. The distance is about 12k, walking to a height of 422m from sea level. Estimated time around 5 hours.
Meeting up
We suggest 10.00am sharp in Omeath. There should be plenty of parking available on the sea front and there are public toilets nearby. We will then travel in as few cars as possible (taking Covid precautions) to a small layby a few minutes away, close to Fathom Forest. This will cut out a short stretch of walking along the main road.
