April 2nd – Fair Head Cliff Top Walk

For our first walk of Spring proper and with the stretch in the days we are going on a new walk which Paula has previously walked – FAIR HEAD AND MURLOUGH BAY North East Antrim coastal/cliff top walk

This walk starts and finishes in a very small car park with no facilities, therefore Paula suggests we meet up in Ballycastle first, then travel in as few cars as possible to the carpark at the start of the walk – about 2-3 miles outside of Ballycastle.

We will be starting from the upper car park at Murlough Bay. The walk goes downhill, along the coast in a loop, before we take a twisting path through woodland to the top of the escarpment again. The bay is really beautiful and remote – those who watch Game of Thrones should recognise it! This part of the walk will probably take 2½ to 3 hours and at this point we pass by the cars.

The next part of the walk involves minimal ascents and descents, as we stay on the top of the cliffs, taking an out-and-back walk along the cliff tops at Fair Head. Hopefully we will get a clear day, as the views of Rathlin and across to Scotland really are stunning.

Finally, return to Ballycastle for refreshments.

Meet-up:- Main car park in Ballycastle at 10.15 where we try to leave some cars, leaving Ballycastle at 10.30 for Murlough Bay
