For Aprils walk we are going to walk Bearnagh and Meelmore trail in the Mourne Mountains
Walk Start: – We will meet up at the Trassey Track car park (Grid reference – J312314) at 10.00am on Sunday 3rd April. The circuit starts and finishes at this point.
Walk Details: – We intend to walk up Trassey track before climbing Spellack’s crags. After reaching the plateau we will continue to climb up Slieve Meelmore (704m) which has superb views on a good day stretching as far as the Sperrins, Lough Neagh and Strangford Lough. We will Climb over the stile, turn right and follow the wall down Meelmore to reach the intersection and take the trail up Slieve Bearnagh (739m). Bearnagh is one of the most distinctive mountains in the Mournes and is renowned for the granite tors on its summit. We will follow the trail down from the top of Bearnagh and this section ends at the col known as Hare’s Gap. We continue the walk up the steps for a short distance until we get to the stile which we cross onto the green road. We follow this path down to the Trassey Track and retrace your steps back to the start.
Walk Duration: – This 6 mile walk will take around five hours depending upon the weather, duration of lunch break or other stops. Terrain: Rugged paths, open mountain. The scenery is amazing on a good day.
Transport Logistics: – Trassey car park is situated just off the B180 Newcastle-Hilltown Road. About 4km after Bryansford take Trassey Road on the left. The Trassey Car Park is 1.5km along this road on the left.
